10:12	Gail Hyatt - they really want a voice update... I mean the REALLY want a voice update... how is David's voice holding up with tour and tour and travel.. and recording. and and and and

10:13	davidscoach - There have been rumors that David is on voice rest, but this is not true!

10:13	Gail Hyatt - Well that is gooood news!
10:13	davidscoach - Talking is what really tires David's voice, not singing.

10:14	Gail Hyatt - How is he able to manage and protect his voice with all the demands on his time?
10:14	davidscoach - He sometimes puts himself on vocal rest during the meet and greets after the show so that he doesn't tire his voice yelling over all the noise.

10:15	davidscoach - He is singing great and we still vocalize regularly to make sure his voice is great for every show.
10:15	Gail Hyatt - Some folks were wondering to what extent you were still able to coach him..

10:15	davidscoach - In between shows he also pops back to L.A. to record as well so he is singing a lot, but his voice is good.
10:15	Gail Hyatt - That is just GREAT news....

10:16	davidscoach - We find it best top have lessons over the phone so we can do that from anywhere.

10:16	Gail Hyatt - Were you able to see the tour in SLC?
10:17	davidscoach - He often calls during the intermission since he is only in Act 2 and he likes to make sure that his voice is warm and in the right place so that he can sing his best for every show.

10:17	davidscoach - He is extremeley concerned that he doesn't ever disappoint any fan.
10:17	davidscoach - I had front row seats the first show. David was great.

10:18	Gail Hyatt - That's one of the many many reasons his fans are so loyal and supportive.
10:18	davidscoach - The whole show was strong, but David really wowed the crowd.

10:18	Gail Hyatt - What are your reflections after witnessing David perform in Utah on tour? Comment by Chocomel

10:19	Gail Hyatt - What did you think?
10:19	Gail Hyatt - David in such a large venue.. home town crowd.. many of us weren't even there.. but we were blown away.. even through youtube!!

10:19	davidscoach - The whole show was great. The idols are getting stronger in general, and David is as well. He has always been a great singer, but he is becoming a better entertainer. He is looking much more comfortable on stage.
10:20	davidscoach - The noise level was through the roof!

10:20	Gail Hyatt - Is that something he has enjoyed .. growing as a performer?
10:20	davidscoach - The fans love him and gave him one of the longest standing ovations I have ever seen.

10:21	davidscoach - He really loves performing and the audience interaction.
10:21	davidscoach - He is very picky about his singing though as well and really works to be vocally in shape and to be as perfect as he can be.

10:22	Gail Hyatt - We could see from day 1 how dedicated he was.. and is!
10:22	davidscoach - He is getting better at accepting praise as well, although he is still not entirely comfortable with it.

10:22	Gail Hyatt - Sunshine had another question about the tour songs....
10:22	Gail Hyatt - Dean - of the four songs that David sings on tour, which is the most vocally challenging? Comment by sunshine

10:23	davidscoach - "When You Say You Love Me" is the most difficult, but is also maybe the most impressive. It really shows how he can sing.

10:23	davidscoach - So many other pop stars just get by today with style and fluff, but David really sings it. People were crying.
10:23	Gail Hyatt - That song brings chills to so many of us..

10:24	davidscoach - I got a great email from a mother whose 134 year old jock son cired and couldn't figure out why.
10:24	davidscoach - We always liked that song and hoped to have him sing it on the show, but never got the chance.

10:25	davidscoach - Sorry, the son was 14! LOL
10:25	Gail Hyatt - ah 14.. I thought maybe 13 or 34.. probably some tears from all ages.

10:25	davidscoach - I am trying to type fast !!
10:25	Gail Hyatt - You are doing great!

10:25	davidscoach - David also worries about Angels because he plays piano with that.
10:26	Gail Hyatt - Even after so many performances?

10:26	davidscoach - ALthough he plays well, he fears he's not as good on piano and then worries that concentrating on piano will take away from his voice.
10:26	davidscoach - David is forever humble and I think always will be.

10:27	davidscoach - He still doesn't like to hear his voice played back and doesn't like to watch his performances.

10:27	Gail Hyatt - Stephanie in fact.. this is her question.

10:27	davidscoach - He is ultra critical and is so picky that every little mistake bugs him even when nobody else can hear it.
10:27	Gail Hyatt - (yes, perfectionism is like that..)

10:28	Gail Hyatt - David has mentioned several times that he doesn’t like the sound of his own voice, and he refuses to watch his own performances. (I always thought that performers needed to do this as a form of self-critique - not that he needs to improve anything!) Is this due to lack of confidence, or is it just the usual teenage self-consciousness kicking in? Comment by Stephanie
10:29	davidscoach - I have only ever worked with one singer that actually liked the sound of his own voice and he was so arrogant that you couldn't stand to be in the same room with him.

10:29	Gail Hyatt - That's no fun !
10:29	davidscoach - Everyone else thinks they sound weird since it sounds different in your head then it does outside of your head.

10:30	davidscoach - It takes a long while to be able to be objective about your voice because it always sounds strange to you. So you think that strange must mean it sounds bad even if everyone else tells you otherwise.
10:31	davidscoach - You also don't hear feeling in your own voice, only if you are in pitch or not, so David doesn't hear all the emotion everyone else does,

10:31	Gail Hyatt - So that's really just purely from the soul..

10:31	davidscoach - He has always had that.
10:31	Gail Hyatt - the voice had a question along those lines...

10:32	Gail Hyatt - For you, is there any balance between musicality and emotion required in a song, do you teach the emotional connection aspect at all (it seems to come so naturally!), or is it something else? Thanksa lot! Submitted by The Voice 115
10:32	davidscoach - It is not something that he learned. I just help him with his technique, help him keep his voice in shape and maybe some phrasing or note ideas, but the rest he was born with.

10:32	davidscoach - I do teach emotional connection. That is really the bottom line. Do people feel anything? Do they connect to you?
10:33	Gail Hyatt - That ability to empathize.. it is just astounding.. in someone so young.

10:33	davidscoach - I have a real pet peeve. In this country we mostly teach notes, we don't teach music. Music is what is behind the notes, what drives the notes. It comes from within. Art in general should be like that. It is what you feel.
10:34	Gail Hyatt - It's an expression.. or extension of yourself, no?

10:34	davidscoach - David just "gets it". Others have to work and work and they never get it. They can do the notes, but it doesn't mean anything!

10:35	Gail Hyatt - all I can say to that... is .. wow.. and yes.
10:35	davidscoach - Yes, it is definitely poting your guts out on stage. That's why it's so scary and also so meaningful when someone can do it.

10:35	Gail Hyatt - And being willing to take a risk..
10:35	davidscoach - David is an enigma, so shy, but when the song starts he is so connected that he almost becomes a different person.

10:35	Gail Hyatt - That's something that also always amazes me... the risk that he takes expressing himself.
10:36	Gail Hyatt - Ok back to questions.. or we will never get through!!

10:36	Gail Hyatt - There were several questions about David's range etc.. this one from marc..
10:36	Gail Hyatt - Dean, David’s voice seems to have gained a whole new range since AI has ended. At this point will his voice still change substantially or is his range pretty much set where it is now? Comment by marc

10:36	davidscoach - Definitely risky! But worth it. I tell all my students that is really what AI and the Public is looking for. There are lots of great singers technically or vocally, but how many really make us feel something?
10:37	davidscoach - I was kind of surprised he did AI this year. I thought he was going to wait another year since his voice really hadn't finished settling yet. His voice is probably 3 notes lower now then when he first went down to Hollywood week.

10:38	davidscoach - That is one of the reasons we worked almost everyday. To make sure he was comfortable with his new sound each week.

10:38	Gail Hyatt - Is it still settling in...?
10:38	davidscoach - Yes, his voice will continue to mature until he is about 23.

10:38	davidscoach - So we have years of hearing David just keep getting better vocally to go along with all that natural style and emotion.
10:39	Gail Hyatt - Gosh, so when he accepts his third grammy.. he may sound a little different?

10:39	Gail Hyatt -
10:39	davidscoach - Yes, but I think his basic timbre won't change. It will just get richer believe it or not.

10:40	Gail Hyatt - Well, I have to say .. that is just stunning to hear.. b/c I don't think we think that's possible.. but I believe you.. and look forward to the future.
10:40	davidscoach - Actually the male voice is at it's peak at the age of 35, for women it is 28.

10:42	davidscoach - To answer a question,Yes, I do feel lucky to have David as a student, but I think he is a little lucky to have found me as well since many vocal techniques out there actually mess up the voice and make them sound unnatural.

10:43	Gail Hyatt - How does David have time to record?
10:43	davidscoach - He really doesn't have time, but he knows that the fans are anxious to get something so he puts every extra minute into finding songs and recording them trying to find the right mix for the CD.

10:43	davidscoach - He has already recorded at least 12, but they are still looking for the best songs.
10:44	Gail Hyatt - Some fans were curious if you had heard any of them.... ?

10:44	davidscoach - He writes, especially great lyrics and I have been encouraging hoim to write his own stuff, but he doesn'y think it is good enough yet. I don't agree.
10:44	Gail Hyatt - (fans.. please be patient.. we can accept only a few at once or the software resets :) )

10:45	davidscoach - Yes, I am lucky enough to have heard several. We rehearse them over the phone and he occasionally emails them to me to get my opinion.
10:45	davidscoach - I guess I could sell them on the internet and make abunch of money huh? No I'd never.

10:46	Gail Hyatt - Well, I can underscore that we are excited... but we want David to be happy with the outcome.. so we will wait patiently.

10:46	davidscoach - He is hoping to have the album out by Octpber. We'll see. That is quite adventurous, especially with the demands of the tour.
10:47	Gail Hyatt - We heard that the Amazon ranking... might have been a little premature on their part...

10:47	davidscoach - David learns incredibly quickly. He is learning songs 2 or 3 days after he first hears them.

10:48	davidscoach - Like all singers David sounds better once he can live with a song tough and really internalize it. That's one of the reasons "Imagine" was so special, he had been singing that since he was 11.
10:48	davidscoach - Yes, David really has a gift as all the great ones do. You can develop a talent, but to be one of the greats the gift has to be there too.

10:50	davidscoach - Tough over the internet, but we will try.

10:51	davidscoach - He hasn't scoped his cords for a while to see what they look like now. He feels fine and he really doesn;t care or even really wnat to know.
10:51	davidscoach - My guess is that one of the cords is still showing residual effects of the paralysis.

10:52	davidscoach - It's funny though, that is one of the reasons he has such a smooth voice. A bit more air comes through naturally than most.

10:55	davidscoach - No, the one thing that the technique I do does better than anything is help people get rid of those breaks so that you don't feel them.

10:55	davidscoach - The reason it is tough is because there is nowhere to hide!

10:56	davidscoach - Your voice is very exposed with long, sustained passages, high notes power notes and delicate notes. It really shows off what a great vocalist David rally is. He is just not all style. He has real chops.

10:58	davidscoach - Other contestants struggles at times because they didn't have the vocal abilities. I think David Cook is very talented, but when he tried to sing "Music of the Night" you could see that he just didn't have the voice to pull of that kind of a song so he had to resort to style.

10:58	Gail Hyatt - (By the way, the remixes were done by an incredibly gifted young man named Cody... he's about David's age..)
10:58	Gail Hyatt - So.. how about some new chapters to the journal?! We loved it!

10:58	davidscoach - Thank you very much. Credit my wife for encouraging me to write down my experiences.
10:59	davidscoach - Once I got into it a few times I realized many of his fans would be interested with a lot of the behind the scenes stuff so I shared it.

11:00	davidscoach - There is not nearly as much "Behind the scenes" stuff. Most everything is out there since the AI gag is off, so I don't know that I have nearly as much interesting stuff, but I am happy to write when I have stuff.

11:07	davidscoach - It's a pretty song, with a nice message, but I think that David is going to go more contemporary and that doesn't have the right feel.
11:07	davidscoach - It wasn't a napkin, just the chords to the song I had written out. We had only rehearsed the songs one time before performing them so I needed notes.

11:11	davidscoach - David was nopt at all happy about the TV performances in Salt Lake. I thought that they were OK. He was very soulful, but he felt bad he forgot words and that he wasn't more warmed up.

11:11	Gail Hyatt - i can tell you that we were thrilled to hear them both..

11:11	davidscoach - He literally just woke up before each performance and like I said we had only run through the songs briefly.

11:12	davidscoach - David NEVER sounds bad though and he sang well even tho he didn't feel totally prepared. It was really fun to play with him again.

11:14	davidscoach - It is important that this first CD quiets any critics that just think he is a flash in the pan. He needs to do something substantial that really shows that he is an artist to be reckoned with.

11:15	davidscoach - His version of Crazy really is soulful tho and would make a cut, but then again all his songs are good. Many like his WYSYLM better than Josh Groban (who studies the same vocal technique by the way.)

11:17	davidscoach - I helped SHeDaisy get their first record deal and many of my students were upset that they didn't give me a credit on their first CD cover, but oh well. I am just really happy when any of my students get noticed.

11:19	davidscoach - I have worked with a lot of talented singers over the years and unfortuantely most of them just don't get the big break they need like David did so it is great when one gets the notice. I have been abole to help, Julianan Hough, Charlie Jenkins (Nashville Star), SheDaisy, Carmen Rasmusen, Rhianon Hanso (Looking for the next Elle Woods - MTV), Benji and Heid (So you thin you can db=nce), so we have had quite a bit of success out of a little studio in Salt Lkae which is fun.
